Diwali is known as the festival of lights. Although it is a major festival for the Hindu community all over India, you find people of all religions celebrating it in Mumbai city.
In Northern India it symbolizes the defeat of the evil Ravana by Lord Ram and his glorious homecoming after 14 years. In Gujarat this festival is celebrated to honor the goddess of wealth Lakshmi and in Bengal, people worship the bold goddess Kali. Little lights known as "diyas" and bright paper lanterns light up the entire city.
Mumbaiites dress up in new clothes and give each other sweets and gifts.
Doors used to be left open on Diwali night to let the goddess Lakshmi enter and bring prosperity and wealth.
Celebrated to mark the victory of good over evil Diwali commemorates the day when Lord Ram was crowned as the King of Ayodhya on his return with wife Sita and brother Laxman after 14 years of exile and slaying of the demon King Ravana. It is characterized by colorful and often noisy fireworks that burst in every corner and path.
Timing: Between October- December
