Lord Krishna's birthday is celebrated in India on eighth day after the full moon of Shravan known as the festival of Janmashtami. On this lucky occasion, devotees fast till midnight and then feast on sweet yogurt, kheer, rice, and potato vegetables.

The next day, pots full of yogurt, butter, and sometimes money are tied up high in the streets - the challenge is to form human pyramids and try to break them so that their contents scatter. This event is popularly known as 'Govinda',

This festival is dedicated to God Krishna. He was born in Mathura (Uttar Pradesh) to defeat the evil King Kansa and other evil elements who were harassing innocent people. He was born to Vasudev and Devaki.

Kansa heard a divine proclamation that the couple's eighth son would be his arch- rival. To prevent this Kansa imprisoned the couple When Shri Krishna was born Vasudev placed him in a crib and took the baby child through the river Yamuna. Thus the Lord survived and eventually killed Kansa.
